Wizard's Selected Pick Three, Pick Six & Trifecta Plays for Monday, September 4th, 2006

Introduction
With the exception of playing the Pick Six when there is a reasonably large carryover, the Pick 3 & Pick 4 are the best wagers at the track. Despite being comparable to a three-race parlay win bet, there is only one takeout from Pick Three wagers, as opposed to the three that would occur on a true parlay. The Pick Three is essentially a baby Pick Six, and should be viewed in that way. But unlike the Pick Six, the Pick Three is not played by large syndicates who can play hundreds or even thousands of combinations, and are the only ones left standing to pick up all of the cash when a couple of longshots knock all of the small bettors out. The key similarity between the Pick Three and Pick Six is that they often provide very generous payoffs that exceed what the win parlay payoffs would have been, and that is where we focus our strategy. The Pick Three can provide large payoffs for the small bettor who is patient in his or her play and looks for value every time he or she makes this bet.

It is imperative to point out that the very nature of the Pick Three differentiates it from regular win/place/show betting, and even exacta/daily double wagering, in that it is NOT a bet that you will hit with high frequency. As those of you who have already purchased this sheet in its first six years of existence know, often is the time that we hit two of the three legs, but miss on a close call in the other one. If you choose to partake in the Pick Three wager, you must be patient, and not judge your play (or this sheet, for that matter) on one day's, or even one week's, performance. Long-term profit on Pick Three or Pick Six plays is derived from pursuing sequences that will be overlaid (i.e. not over-using favorites), and by that very definition the FREQUENCY of hitting a favorable Pick Three will be fairly low, although the payoffs, when hit, will be fairly high.

Avoiding favorites as much as possible is the key to catching Pick Three overlays. If you can't see past one, two, or all three of the favorites in a Pick Three series, then don't make the bet. Playing the favorites, or only low-priced horses, from all three races on the same ticket always results in underlaid payoffs when they win. Our strategy will generally be to put some mid-priced and longshot horses on each ticket in logical combinations with high-probability favorites. They WILL NOT produce a winning Pick Three ticket every day, but when they do, there will be value in the payoff, and our long-term return on investment will benefit from our patience in playing the Pick Three in this manner. Again, if you are the type of player who needs to cash a ticket with relatively high frequency, then the suggestion is to stick with basic win/place/show or exacta betting, which is emphasized in my daily track-specific sheets.

Our approach here will be to provide relatively inexpensive plays (generally $35 or less) keyed upon horses we feel strongly about from our analysis of major tracks across the country. You can double, triple, or even cut in half the amounts suggested on our plays based on your personal budget and level of play. When we suggest Pick Six plays, we will generally provide two or three separate plays for each Pick Six that we analyze; one basic play, one for the middle-budget player, and one for the player willing to invest a fair amount in this potentially windfall-producing bet. The Pick Six offers the best value on days when there is a carryover, and on those days, our strategy and suggested plays for this bet will be more detailed and usually involve larger tickets. However, even when there is not a carryover, a moderate investment is sometimes desirable for many players in the event that their top selections fare very well.

Two or three trifectas will be suggested daily when it appears a good wagering opportunity arises. Trifectas can offer generous payoffs when one or two mid-priced or longshot horses can hit the board, and this wager allows us to concentrate on a key horse or two in a single race rather than having to combine those key horses with projected winners in other races that may not provide the same level of confidence. Trifectas many times offer a good compliment to Pick 3's.

Finally, those of you that purchase the daily Wizard selection sheets and race-by-race analysis from specific tracks will notice that we don't give details on each individual horse here as we do on those sheets. That is because this is intended to be a wagering guide, not a handicapping guide. There is a big difference between the two. It takes one type of skill to handicap a race and deduce the most likely contenders and winners, but it is a separate type of analysis and skill that is needed to properly combine those selections in the optimal ways to allow for long-term profit potential. Both are important in the sport of horse racing, and we believe that we're the first in the business to offer daily guidance and instruction in the area of wagering strategies.

Arlington Park - September 4th, 2006

Arlington Park    Pick 3    Race #4    (3:27 PM ET)

RACE 4: (2)Spanish Frost (3)Falconi (10)Stay On
RACE 5: (2)Royal Flyer (4)Persuaggle (5)Stefies Brite
RACE 6: (9)COBRADOR

Ticket One: 2-3-10 / 2-4-5 / 9 = 3x3x1x$1 = $9
Ticket Two: ALL / 2-5 / 9     = 10x2x1x$1 = $20

COBRADOR debuted going a mile on the turf here last out for trainer Paul McGee and turned in a strong performance. It's a lot to ask of a 2yo to go a route of ground first time out but this colt was up to the task, closing well into a slow pace to finish a game third despite having bled. Can only move forward this time around receiving first time Lasix with a rider switch to Albarado.

Calder Race Course - September 4th, 2006

Calder Race Course    Trifecta    Race #12    (6:04 PM ET)

TOP SPOT: (4)ENERGICO
2ND SPOT: (2)Lordly Manner (3)Ballado In Love (7)No Lies (9)Five Speed
3RD SPOT: ALL (9 horse field)

$1 TRIFECTA TICKET: 4 / 2-3-7-9 / ALL = $28

ENERGICO set a hot and pressured pace and held well to finish a close-up 3rd. Catanese had trained him lightly for his 1st start in two months and he was clearly short. He also prefers a stalking trip. With that race under his belt he figures to improve sharply and he gets a pivotal rider change from Bridgmohan to top jock Cruz. The lightly raced colt will get the right ride this time and is a solid play.

Del Mar - September 4th, 2006

Del Mar    Pick 3    Race #2    (5:30 PM ET)

RACE 2: (2)Savannah Lightning (5)SPECIFIC RULE (8)Paz Tiempo
        (10)Outside Looking In
RACE 3: (1)Skipaslew (4)Sinister Minister (5)PREACHINATTHEBAR
RACE 4: (5)CHARM THE GIANT

Ticket One: 2-5-8-10 / 1-4-5 / 5 = 4x3x1x$1 = $12
Ticket Two:   ALL / 5 / 5       = 12x1x1x$1 = $12
Ticket Three: 5 / ALL / 5        = 1x6x1x$1 = $6
Ticket Four:  5 / 4-5 / 5        = 1x2x1x$2 = $4

CHARM THE GIANT has won 4 of her last 6, and lost another by just a nose. Her most recent race was her best yet, as she beat an outstanding 'key' race field while under a hand ride over this course and distance. Second place finisher Polyfirst returned to win a stakes race, and the 3rd and 4th place finishers also returned with impressive victories. Charm The Giant should work out a good stalking trip under Solis, who elects to ride here over stablemate Dream's, who also is coming off a win over this course and distance.

RACE 7: (2)BIG PROMISE

Ticket Two: ALL / 4 / 2              = 9x1x1x$1 = $9

BIG PROMISE: Last summer this filly showed consistent improvement before going to the sidelines, and she seems to be on a similar pattern this year at age 4. She returned from an 11-month layoff on June 22 but was too 'fresh', fighting the rider and pulling to make a premature move before tiring. She was more manageable on Aug 7 and ran great at 17-1. In that race she stalked a very fast pace, made the lead in the stretch, and lost by just a nose. Since then she's put in two outstanding works over this turf course, and she appears primed for a top effort in her third start back. She can stalk or come from off the pace and retains Michael Baze, who rode her very well last time out.

RACE 10: (5)SMOOTH TALK

Ticket Two: 3-4 / ALL / 5       = 2x9x1x$1 = $18

SMOOTH TALK: With a decent amount of speed in this race this late runner should have a fair chance to rally from behind. His current form is pretty good, but is expected to improve noticeably today with a positive trainer change to John Sadler. Since his last race Smooth Talk has put in three excellent 5F or 6F works over this track, and the switch to runaway leading rider Victor Espinoza is a signal that Smooth Talk is ready for a big effort for his new trainer. He finished a close 2nd three starts back, and need not improve much off that effort to win today at expected square odds.

RACE 1: (1)TUX N TALES
RACE 2: (2)Urban Shocker (4)Kims Atitude (6)Fancy Rose
RACE 3: (1)Low Rider (4)Devil Dawg (6)BOOTCO

Ticket One: 1 / 2-4-6 / 1-4-6 = 1x3x3x$1 = $9
Ticket Two: 1 / ALL / 6       = 1x7x1x$2 = $14

TUX N TALES turned in a strong performance in his debut at Churchill at today's 6F distance for trainer Dale Romans, finishing second while beaten only a neck. Faced much tougher rivlas in a MSW race at the same track in his next start at 7F, and although off the board he ran better than appears after breaking from post 10. Flashed speed last time out while again going 7F, and should appreciate this cutback to 6F.

Monmouth Park - September 4th, 2006

RACE 10: (3)AIR LORD

Ticket One: 2-3-7 / 2-3-5 / 3 = 3x3x1x$1 = $9
Ticket Two:   3 / ALL / 3     = 1x7x1x$1 = $7
Ticket Three: ALL / 2 / 3     = 7x1x1x$1 = $7

AIR LORD appeared to have the field at his mercy in a Mountaineer stakes last out but was virtually eliminated when he nearly went down at the break. He was able to get up for 3rd in a heroic effort. In his maiden breaking win he raced between horses early on, dueling for the front end. Proceeded to put away those horses but then looked like he was going to get passed at the top of the stretch by another first time starter who happened to be a half brother to stakes winner Rockport Harbor. The Stormin Fever colt dug deep and turned back that rival while hitting the wire with something left in the tank. Look for a top performance today. Stable rider DeCarlo is up for the Pletcher outfit.

IRON GODDESS was unveiled at 3-5 against males August 28 but was caught wide all the way and did well to finish 2nd against a speed-bias aided front-running winner. Blinkers go on and she faces her own gender now.

BAYMONT dropped in class to face similar claimers on Aug 17 and rallied boldly thru traffic to get up in time. Her final quarter in :22-4/5 was too much to deny, and may be again. Sheds 8 lbs.

$1 TRIFECTA TICKET: 5 / 3-6-7 / ALL = $24

SWIRLING SOLOMON: After two solid efforts to begin his career this colt added blinkers and Lasix August 12 and took a big step forward. He showed much improved early speed and dueled through a very fast early pace of :22-2/5 and :46-3/5. He put away his rival and actually did very well to hold on for a close 3rd over a course that was favoring closers. Today he meets a field with little other speed and is expected to slow things down. Switches to Bill Mott’s main rider, Velasquez.

Ticket Two: 8 / ALL / 7              = 1x10x1x$1 = $10

SAY REVAIN has exceptional breeding for a NY bred, being sired by a Horse Of The Year, and out of a multiple stakes winning dam. Made just his second career start while coming off a long layoff Aug 12 and dominated his rivals after setting an extremely fast pace. The 2nd place finisher returned to win Sunday. Should have more stamina second time back.
